My name is John Gachunga a graduate of the University of Embu where I pursued Bachelor of Science in Analytical Chemistry. I got born again in 2003 during a mission week in our church, this is where my journey began as a believer in Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. Although born in a Christian family, I didn’t get much of the discipleship to the faith. I experienced much of the discipleship in the Christian Union on Campus.
I remember one afternoon during the first years’ orientation week, Seated in the sports field with my friend. I heard what sounded like a piano from afar and I was stirred up from the within to go and check it out. Just a few meters to the room it was clear that it was Christian union praise and worship training. Unfortunately, my friend hesitated and he immediately changed his mind about joining them. I still went forward and joined the Praise and worship team in the practice. I could feel the warmth of the fellowship and equally saw the passion of brethren in serving God. After making inquiries with one of the leaders I was able to register as a member of the CU.
I didn’t know how much joining the Christian fellowship on campus would become such a beneficial decision for me. The CU Discipleship programs, Anza fyt (First years transition and discipleship program), class fellowships, and commitment class as well as the services among others played a significant role in equipping me holistically for the effective Christian life. Having attended the BEST-P (Bible Expository Self Training Program) a program that helps students on matters of scripture Engagement, I learnt to study the scriptures as well as teach the word of God faithfully.
When I was called to serve in STEM, I was seeking an opportunity to give back to society and therefore seized it. God’s provision through FOCUS Kenya has transformed me from a confused young adult to a responsible, faithful, and authentic leader. How I desired that such a transformation would become manifest in all students. By the grace of God, I look forward to helping the CUs I will be working with to establish good mentorship and discipleship programs and good governance structures to enhance Christian witness on campus. I also hope to closely walk with and mentor CU leaders so that they can effectively serve God and guide the CU in being and making faithful disciples of Jesus among fellow students on campus anchored on the word of God. I look forward to being trained, mentored and grow in my walk with God as I serve the students.
To achieve the above, I am trusting God for partners to journey with me in prayer and financial support as I serve the students. I will be raising my ministry operational costs amounting to a monthly target of Kshs. 22,000. I invite you to consider being part of this great calling, to see students in institutions of higher learning reached and equipped for effective Christian living for the transformation of our society.
