I’m Laureen Barasa, serving as the STEM Staff at Kenyatta University Ruiru Campus and Kiriri Women’s University Christian Unions and in the Associates’ Department.
I try imagining my life without this experience in the student’s ministry and I can’t clearly grasp it. I didn’t know what awaited me and so I gave myself fully to the Lord’s hands and now I can say, His hands really worked on me.
STEM has been a place of self-discovery; I developed a wonderful skill of journaling. This spiritual discipline has opened me up to opportunities for blogging. My communication has improved through invitations to speak to students and associates. Playing volleyball on Wednesdays was an important part of my growth as it affirmed the perspective on the receiving of praise without allowing them to consume you ( when you are serving well and the team is winning) and to accept critics and correction without them breaking (when everything is offside that day). My training and facilitation skills have been harnessed; my interpersonal skills through the formation of new friendships are a gift I will forever cherish. This experience has Instilled values like integrity and faithfulness to scriptures during sermon preparation and presentations.
My best moments have been to sit down with a student or a group of students in my house or their houses for discipleship.; they were not only mentorship sessions for the students but they opened me up to points of vulnerability, accountability, and authenticity in my life. The bi-monthly sharing of my ministry updates with my friends, partners, and associates always felt like having a great crowd of witnesses surrounding me-cheering me and praying with me.
As my term comes to an end, I give myself to God’s hands for I know He will not abandon the work of His hands. Thank you for being part of this journey as a student, a staff, or an associate. I pray that God will fill you with the knowledge of His will through all wisdom and understanding so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way.
